They
met in a chat room on the Internet. Just teenagers, they hit it
off immediately. Despite the long distance (he lived in San Francisco
and she in Detroit), they managed to talk in the phone and warm
letters flowed freely between them. "We were kids, and had
no hope of meeting," he said, "but I was falling in love
with her." Despite all relationship advice to the contrary,
Jon was determined to meet Joy.
"I
couldn't get Joy out of my mind," Jon remembered. "I compared
every girl with how Joy would be when I met her. Finally, I just
put down and bought a ticket to Detroit. I got off the plane, saw
her, and I knew: "This is who I'm going to marry--this is who
I want to be the mother of my children."
"I
was overwhelmed," said Joy. "Here was this guy telling
me he wants me to be the mother of his children. But I wasn't afraid.
That told me it was going to work out."
You've
heard stories like this: couples who come together as if by magic,
who seem to belong with each other as surely as two matching pieces
of a puzzle. Lovers, life mates, partners: the words are just not
enough to describe this kind of bond. The only term that comes close
is Soul Mate. But what exactly is a soulmate? And how can you find
yours?
Many
psychics and astrologers agree that there are several kinds of soulmates.
Twin flames, or split aparts, are considered the ultimate soulmates.
Supposedly two halves of the same spirit, split apart at the beginning
of time, they learn and grow separately through many lifetimes.
At certain times throughout eternity, they come together to experience
a lifetime together. Some intuitives believe you only meet your
twin flame again when you are evolved enough to recognize him or
her. But there can also be a big catch: your twin flame could reincarnate
as your mother, your sister, or a close friend. There are no guarantees
that he or she will come equipped with the "right body"
to be your true love this lifetime. So if you plan on waiting for
your "other half," you could be waiting a long time.
Your
Soul Group: Intimates Through Time
Fortunately,
there are other kinds of soulmate as well. Often, a soulmate can
be someone who was part of your soul group--the initial group of
beings that came to Planet Earth with you. This person may not be
your "other half," but you will have a strong affinity
and attraction for him or her. You have known members of your soul
group for thousands of years. These are the people with whom you
share intimate relationships, lifetime after lifetime. You teach
and grow with one another over thousands of years.
There
are also others whom you have also known before in other lives:
you could call them "soul friends." They are also a kind
of soulmate with whom you have "good karma." They come
into your life when you need support or a "hello," then
sometimes disappear as quickly as they came when you no longer need
them.
Astrologer
and psychic Carol Cilliers described how a soul friend helped her
to broaden her world. She and a girlfriend had planned a trip to
England on a cruise from her native South Africa. At the last minute,
her friend canceled, leaving 20-year old Carol alone on her first
big trip from home. "I was hoping it would all work out well,
and it would be more than I could imagine. Before I left home, I
ran into this man who was visiting his mom. There was a connection
there. He told me to look him up once I got to London."
Carol
arrived in London to stay with her friend's sister, who lived there.
But a strange coincidence happened. "Walking down the road
with my backpack, I ran into the same man." she said. "We
got to know each other, and he invited me on a trip to Alaska."
That Alaska trip eventually brought Carol to the Bay Area, where
she has lived for many years. "My friend introduced me to a
number of new things, a new way of looking at life. I was completely
changing my world, how I perceived things, my value judgments."
Years later, Carol and her soul friend still keep in touch from
time to time. "Part of our agreement is that when one of us
hits a wall or is in some kind of need, we help each other."
What
Makes a Soul Mate Relationship?
That
feeling of growing and evolving along your life path is a hallmark
of most soulmate relationships. Whether your soul mate is a lover
or a friend, they often come into your life to help you recharge,
see things in a new way, or support you in your life's dream. Usually,
the reverse is true as well: you help your soul mate grow and move
along his or her path, too. A soulmate relationship usually feels
healthy and supportive, not toxic or abusive in any way. This is
not to say that a soulmate relationship is all roses. Often, a soulmate
will ask you to make some tough choices in your life. Non-soulmate
relationships can feel oppressive, as though there is a karmic debt
between you.
Another
hallmark of a soulmate relationship can be a sense of instant recognition.
You feel as though you know that person from somewhere. This can
come when you first meet the other person, or later, depending on
how clear your awareness is at the time.
The
Astrology of Soulmates
What
makes a soul mate relationship different? Are they predestined by
fate? Astrologers Karin Stokkink and Carol Cilliers say they are
often able to spot a soul connection between a couple based on certain
elements of their natal chart. (A natal chart show where the sun,
moon, and the planets were located when you were born.) Both feel
that there is a strong connection between the North and South nodes
of the moon, and soulmates. Cilliers says that the Nodes reflect
our growth as spiritual beings. "The South Node describes what
you've been doing in past lives: it's what you come in with."
Often people you have known before in past lives will have some
planets in the same area on their charts as the South Node is on
yours. The North Node is where you are headed, your spiritual growth
this lifetime and beyond. Stokkink says "When one person's
Venus (the planet of love and relationship) conjuncts the other's
North Node, it seems pretty clear that they're soulmates."
One
of Stokkink's clients had dreams of "someone special"
for several months before attending an out of town conference. "When
she got there, she saw a man who looked exactly like the one in
her dreams. They were riveted to each other, ignoring the conference.
Sure enough, when they came to see me, his Venus was conjuncting
her North Node of the Moon. The relationship has been one of continual
intimacy and growth, each using love to make the other more conscious
and aware." Cilliers also notices more planets located near
the North Node in the charts of people who are ready for such an
intense relationship.
But
there are other keys to soul mate bonds as well. Stokkink says that
it isn't a good idea to follow just one approach as gospel truth.
"For instance, a Sun sign book on relationships will tell a
Capricorn to steer clear of a Gemini. But I know one such couple
that has been married for 25 years. And yes, his Venus conjuncts
her moon, so what does that say about the possibility they are truly
soulmates, despite their very different sun signs?" (Go
to part two).
